Deputies in the University of Prishtina: Students Demand Unity of Political Spectrum in Kosovo- Serbia Dialogue

Roundtable 15.11.2017

KDI in cooperation with the Political Science Department of the University of Prishtina “Hasan Prishtina” with the students of this department, deputy of the Assembly of Kosovo, Mr. Glauk Konjufca from Vetevendosje Movement, Bilall Sherifi from the Initiative for Kosovo (Nisma) and Professor of Political Sciences, Afrim Hoti, organized the discussion “The Future of the Kosovo-Serbia Dialogue: Student’s Perspective”, highlighting the need for broad coordination between political actors, civil society, media and academia before starting the new phase of this dialogue.

Glauk Konjufca, deputy of Vetevendosje Movement, said that dialogue represents an important topic because it directly affects the society and the state of Kosovo. He stressed that Kosovo-Serbia dialogue was started by the Kosovo government without a clear platform without a detailed plan for protecting Kosovo’s strategic interests, a process that was not transparent and has produced consequences for Kosovo. Regarding the future of this process, MP Konjufca expressed the conviction that Kosovo will win a seat in the UN only in exchange for the territorial autonomy of Serbs within Kosovo.

Meanwhile, Bilall Sherifi, deputy of Nisma, assessed that in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue two major mistakes have been made by the Kosovo Government, rather than being the carrier of the process itself, it has handed over its role to international representatives. While the second mistake according to deputy Sherifi was made when it was agreed to negotiate on the Ahtisaari package. Sherifi estimated that there should be no consensus that goes beyond the Ahtisaari package and should not be allowed to be opened. He added that a platform for the views of the state of Kosovo should be built in these talks with the help of local and international experts.

While the students of this department were concerned about the non-implementation of the agreements reached and the format and topics discussed in the dialogue. The students asked for a clear platform for the new phase of the dialogue, which would foretell the composition of the delegation, the format of the talks and the topics to be discussed. Students also demanded that the platform and composition of the delegation for the new phase be legitimized by the Assembly.
