Assembly of Kosovo recently has initiated the idea for drafting a special law for media, which aims to protect the media, journalists’ rights in the working place and copyright. Through this law initiators aim to fight against the fake news and to discipline portals that publish with uncontrolled content. Initiators claim that the legal framework is inadequate and only superficial fixes these segments, as it is not dedicated to the media directly. On the other hand, the journalists’ community has opposed this initiative, considering that there are already enough laws protecting the media, copyright, libel and insults, as well as their labor rights. In order to discuss whether there is a need for a law on media, KDI, in cooperation with the Department for Research, Library and Archive (DRLA) has organized a roundtable discussion with topic “Does Kosovo needs a special Law on media?” In this roundtable discussion has been presented also a parliamentary research conducted by KDI, which compared the practices of other countries with regard to this topic.
