Women participation at EMBs scarce, called for greater participation in elections

25.07.2017

Patriarchal mentality, perception of the electoral process as violent, lack of strategies and political parties’ policies in nominations etc. were some of the challenges that were discussed during the debate organized by KDI in Prizren. With the subject ”women participation in organizing and managing elections’ responsible structures”

Although trends in women’s participation in managing electoral organs between election 2014-2017 has marked an increase of 7%, however, it’s still insufficient to guarantee gender equality. Consequently in 2017 parliament elections, women keep being underrepresented by 23% in relation with men candidates which goes up to 77%.

Also in 2017 on the electoral commission, only 21% of women have leadership roles, related to men which goes to 79% commissions exercise the chairman position.

While gender representation in the electoral management structures (TMZ) by political parties LVV leads with 38%, VAKAT 29%, LDK- coalition with 25%, NDS 22%, PDK-coalition 17%, while PLE and PDAK with 2%.
