Political parties to be constructive and expedite the establishment of Kosovo Assembly

15.08.2017

Kosovo Democratic Institute (KDI) is closely following the recent developments related to the establishment of the 6th legislature – a process which was delayed once again. It is the duty and the constitutional obligation of elected representatives to represent citizens’ will in the governing institutions and the establishment of such bodies is a prerequisite.

Failure to attend the inaugural session is a departure of the Assembly members from the citizens’ representation, thus the Institute calls on all the members of the Assembly to be present the session and to be constructive toward their responsibilities. We also urge political actors to participate in consultative meetings and contribute to inter-party discussions.

We invite the political parties represented in the Assembly, to move away from their firm positions and find a sustainable solution that will make way to the establishment of the Assembly and the Government.

KDI also calls on all deputies to fully respect the institution of the Assembly and their mandate and refrain from the denigrating language and mutual accusations that damage Assembly reputation.

After the establishment of new institutions, electoral reform should be the priority of political parties aiming to avoid delays in future election cycles. Legal provisions should not be subject to interpretations grounded on the momentary positions of political parties, but rather implemented in objective manner as foreseen by their authors.
